TRAXEL STEVENS Forest Park The Woodlands The Woodlands, TX Traxel Stevens, age 90, of The Woodlands, TX, formerly of Austin, died Wednesday, February 27th, 2008. He was born James Traxel Stevens on March 28, 1917, in Shreveport, LA, the son of Samuel Clemens and Nevah Hill Stevens. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maxine Fowler Stevens; daughter, Linda Menn of The Woodlands, TX; son, Barry and wife Gayla, of Winnsboro, LA; granddaughters, April Menn Dickerman of The Woodlands, TX; and Jessica Stevens Hamby, Jennifer Stevens Juneau, and Jacqueline Stevens, all of Ruston, LA. In August 2005, after 59 years in their beloved Austin (40 years in the same house), Traxel and Maxine moved to The Woodlands to be near their daughter. Stevens graduated from Fair Park High School, Shreveport, in 1934 and received a degree from Louisiana College, Pineville, LA, in 1942. He was a veteran of World War II. After the war, he did graduate work in journalism at The University of Texas-Austin. Traxel's journalism career included: News coverage of Austin city hall and Travis County courthouse, for KVET radio (1947-48); newspaper correspondent for Texas newspapers at the State Capitol with Long News Service (1949-54); journalism director, University Interscholastic League (1954-56); managing editor of The Texas Outlook and communications director, Texas State Teachers Association, beginning in 1956. He retired from TSTA in 1981. Later, he was author of Vision, Vigilance, and Victory, a history of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, and On Solid Rock, a history of Northwest Hills United Methodist Church, Austin. He published two books of memoirs. Stevens had been a member of the Society of Professional Journalists (Sigma Delta Chi) and was involved with Lifetime Learning Institute of Austin. His volunteer work included many years as a reader for Austin Recording for the Blind, and assisting with West Austin Caregivers. He sang in church choirs for most of his life, at weddings and funerals and a few "hog killin's." He was active in Northwest Hills United Methodist Church, Austin, where he was a charter member. After moving to The Woodlands, he and Maxine attended Woodlands Community Presbyterian Church and then joined The Woodlands United Methodist Church. Traxel took his work seriously, but not himself. He looked for humor throughout life. That included the golf course, even though the game did not treat him kindly. So he felt his mission in life was to make others feel good about their golf game-compared to his game. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held Monday, March 3, 2008, at 10:00 AM at Northwest Hills UMC, Austin. Reverend Bill Henderson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Northwest Hills United Methodist Church, Austin, to Recording for the Blind, Austin, or a charity of choice.

JUDY NICHOLS 7/25/1949 - 3/4/1998 Remembrance You can shed tears that she is gone, or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back, or you can open your eyes and see all she has left. Your heart can be empty because you can't see her, or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she's gone, or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn you back. Or you can do what she'd want: Smile, Open Your Eyes, Love and Go on. In Loving Memory of a wonderful Mother, MeMe, and Best Friend Daughter, Shannon

Frank Stanton Head was born on January 6, 1927, on the family farm, south of Eros, LA. His parents were Jesse George and Helen Allena (Garrett) Head. He had an older brother, Jesse Garrett, two older sisters, Mellie Mason "Sissie" (Morris) and Frances Roberta (Adkins), and two younger sisters, Mary Helen and Betty Lou (DeRouen). In 1943 he graduated from Chatham High School. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1946 and again from 1950-1952. In 1952 he was married to Martha Joyce Taylor and they built their home in Westlake, LA. They were blessed with three children, Linda Carol, Janise Diana, and David Stanton. After several years of attending night classes and while working full time at Davison Chemical Company, Frank enrolled full time at McNeese State University and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1969 with a double major in Mathematics and Physics. He retired from W.R. Grace as a Plant Engineer after 31 years. Frank was a quiet and patient father as well as a talented and gifted man. He needed more space to build and repair, or "tinker" as his family fondly said, so he built a large workshop. In this haven of tools and machines, he made games and puzzles for his children. Once, his daughters hurried home from school because a TV repairman would be at the home--they had never seen a repairman since they knew their daddy could do anything! His son was fortunate to have a dad who knew cars and how to keep them running. Frank enjoyed reading and was often was seen with a book in hand if he wasn't tinkering in the workshop. Frank accepted Jesus as his personal Savior as a twelve-year-old boy in Sunday School at Chatham Baptist Church. As a parent he took his family to church each time the doors were open. He faithfully served God as a church Deacon and director of the Youth Department at 1st Baptist Church of Westlake, LA for many years. He led by example. Later in life, as a single man, he attended Magnolia Baptist Church in Big Woods, LA before moving to Sulphur. Frank is survived by his three children: Linda Burrows and husband Gerald of Oklahoma City, Ok; Janise Crumpler and husband Tim of Sulphur; and David Head and wife Marie of Big Woods, LA. His legacy includes sixteen grandchildren: Kelley Burrows Gibson, Phillip Burrows, Stuart Burrows, Taylor Burrows, Cora Burrows, Kate Burrows, Ting Burrows, Amy Crumpler Mayo, Jacob Crumpler, Seth Crumpler, Claire Crumpler, Gracie Crumpler, Cole Crumpler, Garrett Head, John Thomas Head, Phillip Head and eight great grandchildren. He is survived by his children's mother, Joyce Head of Sulphur; Dee Head, mother of three grandsons, of Sulphur; brother, Jess; sisters, Sissy, Frances, and Betty Lou; and his friend of many years, Pauline Hooper of Sulphur, LA. He is preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; a three-year-old sister, Mary Helen Head; and sister-in-law, Vern Head. The family wishes to thank their beloved Dad's caretakers of many years, Lucille Poole and Susan O'Connor and the angels of Odyssey Hospice for their recent help.
