ALVIN WILSON (BILL) NEWKIRK Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA Alvin Wilson (Bill) Newkirk went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, January 30, 2008. Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, February 2, 2008, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, Louisiana; interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Services will be officiated by Dr. Alan Miller, Reverand of First Baptist Church, Monroe. Mr. Newkirk was born on January 11, 1925 at his family farm home in Jessieville, Arkansas. He graduated from the Jessieville High School. He attended Arkansas Tech at Russellville and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. Mr. Newkirk entered the US Navy on December 23, 1943. He attended the University of Texas in the Naval Aviation Cadet Program (V-5); Naval Air Technical Training Command (NATTC) in Norman, Oklahoma; Naval Air Gunnery School, Whidbey Island, Washington. Mr. Newkirk was also stationed at Jacksonville, Florida and Miami Florida. As a member of the bomber squadron during World War II, he was stationed in the Pacific at Hawaii, Iowa Jima, Tinian, and Saipan. Mr. Newkirk was honorably discharged on June 4, 1946. He was a 53-year member of First Baptist Church, Monroe, Louisiana and served as a lifetime deacon. He enjoyed hunting, camping, attending church, and playing golf. Mr. Newkirk began working with the Army Corps of Engineers in October 1949 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was assigned to the Monroe, Louisiana office of the Corps of Engineers in June 1951. He was the Resident Engineer for the construction operation and maintenance of the Ouachita River Navigation System in Arkansas and Louisiana. He retired as Resident Engineer from the Monroe Navigation Field Office on September 28, 1985 with 38 ½ years of service. Mr. Newkirk was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin Forest and Eula Ward Newkirk; sister, Esther Zeigler, and three brothers, Howard, Jeff, and John Newkirk. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Myrtis Mophett Newkirk; daughter, Debra Newkirk Hazelwood and husband Dwight Hazelwood of Knoxville, TN; son, Al Gordon Newkirk and his wife Kandi Rickel Newkirk of Cullowhee, NC; and one granddaughter, Alyson Florence Hazelwood of Knoxville, TN. Pallbearers are Johnny Newkirk of Bryant, AR; Ronnie McKnight of Little Rock, AR; Greg Mophett and Stephen Mophett both of Jonesville, LA; Jack Windham of Monroe; Tom Howell of Pace, FL; Scott Johnson of Monroe, LA; and Rick Lee of Milton, FL. Honorary pallbearers are all deacons and their wives who served with Bill at First Baptist Church, Monroe. CHARLES ALLEN PUCKITT ROSE-NEATH MARSHALL STREET Shreverpot, LA A worship service celebrating the life of Charles Allen Puckitt, 66, will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 2, 2008, at Faith Tabernacle located 4901 Pine Hill Road, Shreveport, LA. Officiating will be Dr. Shelton W. Young, Pastor Trey Lewis, III, Dr. Lawrence Kennedy and Bro. Brett Puckitt. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens North, Blanchard, LA. The family invites and will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday evening at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Funeral Home and from 1:00 PM until service time at the church Saturday. Charles was born May 11, 1941 in Winnfield, LA and went to meet Jesus in Heaven Tuesday, January 29, 2008. A longtime resident of Blanchard, LA, he was a member of Faith Tabernacle. He retired from KCS Railroad as a Dispatcher after 25 years of service. Charles had been blind for 24 years of his life, but his disability never stopped his being a "Warrior for God". Friends and family will miss him dearly. Charles, through all of his medical conditions including a kidney transplant and being a survivor of cancer, never quit serving and witnessing for Jesus Christ. He was an inspiration to everyone he met. Thank you God for sharing him with us. His father, George Charles Puckitt, preceded Charles in death. Left to cherish beautiful memories are his wife of 47 years, Patricia Manges Kennedy Puckitt of Blanchard, LA; mother, Mary Sue Poole Puckitt of Olla, LA; son, Tim Allen Puckitt and wife, Darlene of Benton, LA; daughters, Kathy Elizabeth and Debra Jeanne Puckitt both of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Chad Allen Puckitt, Brett Austin Puckitt, Kristen Paige Puckitt and Lauren Victoria Stringer; great grandchild, Carter Allen Puckitt; and one on the way. Weldon Bares officiating, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd. Monroe, LA. Tommy was born April 24, 1953 in Tampa, FL and died January 30, 2008 in Monroe, LA at the age of 54. He was preceded in death by his father, Billy Willard McJunkins and step-father, Rex Bullock. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Patricia Trimble McJunkins; son, John Thomas McJunkins, Jr.; mother, Sue Bullock all of Monroe, La.; step-mother, Betty McJunkins of Shreveport, LA; brothers, Tim McJunkins and wife, Becky of Longview, TX and Trent McJunkins and wife, Lori of Monroe, LA; sisters, Sarah McAbee of Hartselle, AL and Joni Lindsay and husband, Jeff of Mooringsport, LA; father and mother-in-law, Dan and Betty Trimble of Monroe, La.; brother-in-law, Michael Trimble of Derby, CT; sister-in-law, Peggy Estopinal and husband, Ryan of Nashville, TN; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends beyond count. He enjoyed his family and set aside every Sunday night as Father-and-Son-time, strictly enforced and richly beneficial to both father and son, among those highlights were going to the movies together. Tommy was an entrepreneur, starting two businesses and the managing partner of a third business. He first started McJunkins Tire Center in Monroe in 1980, and then in 1987 started Corporate Computing, Inc. of Monroe. Most recently he, along with partners, acquired and sold Diamond Dodge of Bastrop, LA He was very involved in law enforcement in Ouachita Parish, graduating from the Police Academy at Northeast Louisiana University. He served on the Monroe Police Reserves, Ouachita Parish Sheriff Reserves and the Marshall's office of the City of Monroe all at the same time. Because of his desire to help people, Tommy was drawn to public service and in 1995 ran successfully for Ouachita Parish Police Juror. He was reelected, without opposition, for a second term in 2000 and resigned in 2001 to devote more time to his family and business. Tommy was a member of the Lea Joyner United Methodist Church in Monroe, LA. He was an enthusiastic flyer of powered parachutes, having flown in numerous meets around the country. He also loved dirt-bike racing and participated in this sport for many years. He retired from Bell South as a manager after 36 years. Mrs. McCartney was born in Atlanta, Texas on May 23, 1936 to the union of Virgil Taylor and Madgie Wall McDuff and died Friday, February 1, 2008 at the Hardtner Medical Center in Urania. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Olla. Olive was born March 24, 1912 in Rockford, IL and passed away Friday, February 1, 2008 at Glenwood Medical Center. She moved to Monroe at a very young age and was a life-long resident. Olive graduated from Ouachita Parish High School in 1929. She worked at Twin City Printing; Bond's Bakery and for many years helped her husband in the operation of Parker Wholesale. She was a life-long member of Monroe, where she attended First Baptist Church and taught children's Sunday school for many years. She loved playing hymns on the piano in Sunday school and at family gatherings. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Ellsworth Parker, parents Washington and Irene Boynton and her Sibling, Ruth Walton. Survivors include two Sons, James Morris Parker and wife Joan of Monroe, LA and Charles Irving Parker and wife Mary Ellen of Daphne, Al; Four Granddaughters, Gwen Martin and husband Dan, Cheryl Spradling and husband Mike, Allyson Parker, Ginger Parker and One Grandson, James Parker, two Great Granddaughters, Mikayla Spradling and Ashley Spradling; and numerous Nieces and Nephews. He was also a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict having served in the U.S. Air Force. He was preceded in death by his father: Jack May and his brother: John May. Survivors include his daughter: Megan May, his mother: Mary Ann Evans May both of West Monroe, his brother: Prentice May of Jonesboro, his brothers and sisters-in-law: Henry and Dee May of Ft. ARTHA LEE PATTON LANDRY Greenoaks Funeral Home Baton Rouge, LA A native of Clarks, LA and a retired employee with the Louisiana school for the deaf, she passed away Saturday January 26, 2008 at her home in Baton Rouge, she was 76. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. A memorial visitation was held on Wednesday January 30, 2008 1:00 PMm. until 4:00 PM at the Greenoaks Funeral Home, Baton Rouge, LA. DIANE SMITH MYERS Dr. Diane Myers was born December 30, 1947, in Austin, Texas. Services were held January 27, 2008, at Arborlawn United Methodist Church, Fort Worth, Texas. The daughter of the late Percine Crow Towery and Dr. Raymond C. Smith. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Texas Christian University, and her Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees in counseling psychology from Texas Woman's University. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship and clinical internship at Long Island jewish Medical Center-Hillside Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, new York, N.Y. She was an accomplished therapist, diagnostician, author and speaker. Early in her career she worked for 11 years at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Forth Worth in the Offices of Medical Education, Educational Planning and Development. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, John Myers; son, Shawn Myers; sister, Pattie Menge and her husband, Roy; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of dear friends.
MARVIN HAYES SMITH, SR. Canale Funeral Directors Memphis, Tn. Funeral services for Marvin Hayes Smith Sr., 82, of Memphis and formerly of Greenville, Miss., will be at 10 A.M., Thursday, February 7 at the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. He died January 31 at home in Memphis. Mr. Smith, the son of the late William Burris and Elvira Mottley Smith of Greenville, graduated from Greenville High School, where he played on the Mississippi Division 1-A State Championship football team of 1943. He and five of his brothers served in the Army in WWII where he fought at the Battle of the Ardennes and again in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Smith was in the outdoor advertising business in Greenville and was later a commercial artist and sign painter in Memphis and West Monroe, LA, where he retired from Lamar Advertising Company. Mr. Smith was active in the Greenville Kiwanis and Jaycees, where he served as president. He volunteered his time with the Greenville Little Theatre where he created set designs, and the Greenville Summer Carnival where he served as vice president in 1962. In Memphis, he created playing field designs for the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium and helped restore the city owned Grand Carousel as an employee of the Memphis Park Commission. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth Jeanne Adams Smith, of Memphis; a daughter, Deborah Smith Byram, of Memphis; two sons, M. Hayes Smith Jr. of Memphis, and Robert Adams Smith of Whitfield, MS.; a brother, David Mottley Smith of Bastrop, Texas; two grandchildren, Paul Wesley Byram and Mary Elizabeth Byram White of Southaven, MS; and a great grandchild. JOE MARY MCKOIN CUMMINS Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA Funeral services for Mrs. Joe Mary McKoin Cummins, of Monroe, will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 5, 2008, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Rev. Paul Sabin officiating. Private Burial will be in Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery in Oak Ridge, LA. Joe Mary was born on October 17, 1913; the oldest of four daughters born to Dr. Bunnie McKoin and Enid Wimberly McKoin. She attended grade school in Mer Rouge, Louisiana and Georgia Tucker grade school in Monroe. She was a member of the first Monroe Chapter of a high school sorority, DBS. She graduated from Ouachita Parish School and then attended a girl's school, Sullins, in Bristol, Virginia. She received a degree in Kindergarten Primary Teaching at what was known then as Normal in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Joe Mary married Dr. Jay W. Cummins, a physician in Oak Ridge, Louisiana where they lived for several years before moving to Monroe. They were parents to three sons, Bunnie, Jay and Joe. During World War II she was responsible for recruiting ladies in the Sherrouse Area to make bandages for the Red Cross. Joe Mary was a Cub Scout Den Mother for several years, a member of Ouachita Parish Medical Auxiliary and chairman of the Baby Clinic sponsored by the old Junior Charity League which met in the St Francis Hospital basement. She was a member of the National College fraternity Zeta Tau Alpha and served as Pledge Advisor for a time. She owned and operated an antique shop, 5C Country Store for several years. She was a member of the Memorial Methodist Church and taught Sunday School there. Joe Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Jessie Lee McKoin Woods and Dean McKoin Bushong; a son, Bunnie McKoin Cummins and wife Ann; and a grandson, Richard McKoin Cummins. She is survived by twin sons and their wives; Jay and Betty Cummins of Mangham, Louisiana; Joe and Dot Cummins of West Monroe, Louisiana; one sister; Joyce McKoin Swanson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, six grandchildren; Erin Paige Cummins, Ryan Deason Cummins, Rebekah Cummins Fuller, Jay Scott Cummins, Mary Ellen Cummins Thompson and Kelley Doucette, also a number of nieces and nephews. Julius Russell officiating and Eugene Dunn speaking. Interment will follow in Old Bethel Cemetery in Grayson. Mr. Russell was born in Columbia on March 18, 1952 to the union of Hebert Ezra and Doris Elaine Claunce Russell and passed away Sunday, February 3, 2008 at Citizens Medical Center. He was retired from the Department of Transportation and Development and previously worked as a truck driver for Double R Trucking. He was a member of the National Angus Assoc. and Cross Roads Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Barkley Russell of Kelly, his mother, Elaine Claunch Russell of Kelly, his daughters and son-in-law, Cathy and Gary Crossfield of Norfolk, VA and Karen Russell of Tallulah, his son, William Russell of Kelly, his brother and sister-in-law, Danny and Sue Russell of Monroe, his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and John McCoy of Monroe, three grandchildren, Alexis Crossfield, Andrew Crossfield, and Hunter Robbins. JOHN MILTON RHORER Wilbert Funeral Home Plaquemine, LA Funeral services for John Milton Rhorer, 87, of Plaquemine will be at 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 7 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Plaquemine with visitation in the church from 8:30 until 11:00 AM. He died February 3 at the home of his daughter, Donna, in Monroe, Louisiana. Mr. Rhorer, the son of the late Philip Goode Rhorer and Sybil Marionneaux Rhorer Brown, graduated from Plaquemine High School in 1938. On April 5, 1944, he married Magdalen Louise Hebert, and she was his beloved wife for 64 years. As a member of the U. S. Navy in WWII, he served in the Pacific Theater. He was stationed in San Diego, California, and Whidbey Island, Washington. Mr. Rhorer retired from the Civil Engineering Unit of the Louisiana Department of Highways in 1977 and reveled in years spent in purposeful retirement. A dedicated gardener and an avid fisherman, Mr. Rhorer enjoyed the outdoors and particularly delighted in sharing the intricacies and secrets of fishing with his grandchildren. He was also a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and the Plaquemine chapter of the Knights of Columbus, and American Legion Home Post, No. 167. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, 4 brothers: P. G. Rhorer, Edward Hawley Rhorer, Walter Marionneaux Rhorer, and James Berkeley Rhorer, and his only sister: Kathleen Rhorer Landry. He is survived by his aunt, Margaret Marionneaux of Plaquemine; three daughters, Dr. Donna R. Kjeldaas and her husband Per Martin Kjeldaas of Monroe; Judy Louise Rhorer, also of Monroe, and Sybil R. Lefebvre and her husband, Dr. Richard Anthony Lefebvre, Sr. of Monroe; five grandchildren, John Rhorer Higdon, Sr. and his wife Sheri Judice Higdon of Centerville; Mary Mixon Wilbert Higdon Brinkerhoff and her husband, William Robert Brinkerhoff of Monroe; Angela Williams Watts and husband Dale Lee Watts of Watson; Dr. Richard Anthony Lefebvre, Jr. of Monroe; and Lauren Magdalen Lefebvre of Baton Rouge; four great grandchildren, Carolyn Louise Higdon and her brother, John Rhorer Higdon, Jr. of Centerville; Emily Claire Brinkerhoff of Monroe, and Madeleine Leigh Watts of Watson; and numerous nieces and nephews including John Hawley Landry and Edward Hawley "Skipper" Rhorer. Rhorer, 84, of Plaquemine will be at 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 7 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Plaquemine with visitation in the church from 8:30 until 11:00 AM. Recently, she was cared for in the Monroe home of her daughter, Sybil, assisted by her other daughter, Judy; but she died February 4 at St. Francis Hospital, in Monroe, Louisiana. Mrs. Rhorer, was lovingly parented and supported by her mother, Louise Dubois Hebert, and her maternal grandmother, Celestine LeBlanc Dubois. She graduated from St. John's High School in 1941 and later from Baton Rouge Business College. On April 5, 1944, she married John Milton Rhorer, and he was her cherished husband for 64 years. Mrs. Rhorer retired in 1987, from Citizens' Bank and Trust where she served as branch manager and bank loan officer. A dedicated homemaker, Mrs. Rhorer enjoyed large gatherings and spared no amount of preparation for family or friends. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and they loved nothing more than to gather around her for a card game of Old Maid or Fish. She also enjoyed time with her many friends and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Plaquemine Garden Club, and the Women's Auxiliary of River West Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her mother, grandmother, and husband. She is survived by her three daughters, Dr. Donna R. Kjeldaas and her husband Per Martin Kjeldaas of Monroe; Judy Louise Rhorer, also of Monroe, and Sybil R. Her love of piano playing was only surpassed by her love of floral arranging for her family, friends and church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mariete Nale. He was born December 11, 1910 in New Orleans, where he lived for 95 years before relocating to Monroe, LA, following Hurricane Katrina. He is the son of the late Merwin James Angell and the late Henrietta Barthel Angell. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 71 years, Irma Bailey Angell. Beloved father of the late Donna Angell Sciretta, loving grandfather of Vicki Sciretta Weber of Austin, TX and Robin Sciretta Brown (husband Dr. Charles E. Brown, III) of Monroe, LA. His sisters are Alma "Honey" Angell Watzke [the late Joseph Watzke] and Dorothy Newcomb Angell, brothers Irving N. Gilbert [the late Juanita Doty Gilbert] and the late John Minter Angell (wife Annabelle Webb Angell), as well as many nieces and nephews. Merwin attended Howard Elementary School and Samuel J. Peters High School in New Orleans. In 1929 he worked for New Orleans Belting Co. where he manufactured belting until 1930. He then worked for the U.S. Attorney's Office before transferring to the U.S. Customs Service where he worked for 34 1/2 years until retirement as Import Specialist in 1973. In 1969 he was named Customs Employee of the Year. Merwin enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden and spending time with his wife. His greatest accomplishment was maintaining a job during the Great Depression. Merwin was a member of National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) and member and supporter of the National Wildlife Federation. Monday, February 11, 2008 at the Pleasant Valley Assembly of God in the Pleasant Valley Community of Ouachita Parish with Bro. Chris Meredith officiating . Interment will follow at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop. The family will receive friends Sunday evening, February 10th, from 5:00 PM till 8:00 PM at Cox Funeral Home in Bastrop and again Monday morning from 9 a.m. till 10:30 AM at the church. Mrs. Betty Jean Frost was born March 9, 1947 in Bastrop and she died Wednesday February 6, 2008 in Shreveport. Mrs. Frost was preceded in death by her parents, K.T. and Tommie Sherman Dosher. She was a former manager of Regis Hair Salon in Pecanland Mall. Betty was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She was a constant source of strenghth and encouragement to her family always providing them with love and motherly advice. She was a selfless servent who put others first ahead of her own needs and concearns. Betty is survived by her husband Tommy Frost of Downsville; five sons, Chris Meredith and wife Denise of Jackson, MS, Bart Meredith of Olla, LA, Bruce Meredith of Monroe, Jamie Meredith and wife Katie of Jackson, MS, and Thomas Frost, Jr. of Downsville; a daughter, Kim Austin and husband Rodney of Calhoun; four sisters, Patsy Costello of Monroe, Bobbie Schulingkamp and husband Jim of Mandeville, LA, Donna Davis and husband Hank of Calhoun, and Debbie Dosher of West Monroe; fourteen grandchildren, Kristen Meredith, Jed Meredith, Jon Meredith, Dustin Meredith, Noah Meredith, Logan Frost, Garrett Frost, Shelby Frost, Tyler Austin, Corey Austin, Courtney Austin, Zoey Perritt, Sadie Perritt, and Hunter Meredith; two great-grandchildren, Avery Meredith and Ethan Jordan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
