ERNA LEVI CAHN ERNA LEVI CAHN Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA Erna Levi Cahn was born in the tiny German town of Heigerloch in 1908. She came to the U.S. as a young woman, fortuitously escaping the Nazi Holocaust, which claimed her beloved father, sister, niece and many other family members. She married Victor Cahn, who himself had within a hairs breadth escaped the Nazis. They married in Monroe in December, 1941 and lived on Adams Street at the intersection of three railroads. They were blessed with a daughter, Carol Jean, in 1944. Victor worked very hard selling pipe and steel and on weekends both he and Erna bought, raised and delivered chickens together to the wonderful people of downtown Monroe. Victor passed away too soon in 1953. Erna Cahn was loved by all who had the good fortune to know her. She represented the epitome of warmth, determination, caring and goodness. She lived on her own at the Stubbs Avenue home that she and Victor had built in good health until she was 95! Well into her 90's when she could no longer drive, Erna walked continually everywhere to shop and visit friends-often walking from Riverside Drive all the way to the Walmart. During her long walks she made many new friends of all ages and backgrounds who were immediately impressed by her indomitable spirit and ready smile. Her many friends brought great happiness into her life, that she always gratefully returned. In memory of her sister, who had been a trained classical pianist in Germany, Erna taught herself to play the piano and treated friends and family to wonderful waltzes and show tunes. Playing the piano was always a great source of joy and comfort to her and she continued to play and entertain people even after a recent stroke made it difficult to use one of her hands. Erna was also renowned as a great cook. She loved preparing her German specialties for family, friends and neighbors and always had a tasty treat ready for visitors. Her home was "the place" for Neville teens in the late 50's. Her daughter, Carol Jean, a successful salesperson for Time Warner, best selling author and speaker who lives in New York with her adman/writer husband, David, was the love of Erna's life. Carol understood the many sacrifices her Mother made for her. She was devoted to her Mom and flew down to visit every few weeks to be with her and monitor her care at Avalon Place. Erna always eagerly looked forward to Carol Jean's visits and gained great energy from their precious time together. Up until this past month Erna and Carol Jean still shopped at Steinmart's and Dillards and went out with her many friends. Erna Cahn was a truly extraordinary woman who will be immeasurably missed and fondly remembered. Without a doubt she brought happiness into the many lives she touched from her neighbors and friends on Stubbs Avenue to the men and women at both Azalea Estates and Avalon Place. She was a Monroe icon a caring, smart, spiritual woman, who lived a most healthy, independent and vigorous life that we could all aspire to. She is survived by Carol Jean and David Gold, her granddaughter, Shanti and her cousin, Greta Kende, 92, of New York City. Services will be held on Tuesday, October 9 at 11:00 am at Mulhearn Funeral Home, 2308 Sterlington Rd. Visitation will be Monday, October 8 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the funeral home.
