ROSALIE "ROSE" BALLARD SPOHRER Greenoaks Funeral Home Baton Rouge, LA Rosalie “Rose” Ballard Spohrer passed peacefully away in the presence of her family on Monday, June 4, 2007, in Columbia, MS. Born Marie Rosalie Ballard in Hebert, LA, on Feb. 18, 1921, she was the sixth child of Edgar Leonard and Laura Douciere Ballard. She graduated from Mangham High School in Monroe, Louisiana at the end of the Depression. Upon graduation, she attended Northeast Louisiana State College for two years, graduating with an associate degree. She entered the work force in 1939, working several years at Cotton’s Bakery as a home demonstrator, riding the bread trucks out to communities in North Louisiana and Texas and demonstrating how to make fancy sandwiches and party foods. She later went to work as a secretary for the War Department at Selman Field in Monroe, LA . She fell in love with one of her brothers’ friends—Henry Spohrer, a tall, quiet man. Rosalie was a war bride-she and Henry were married on June 30, 1943, in Monroe, after which he soon left for the European Theater of World War II. Rose was a matriarch to her large family. In Baton Rouge, LA, she and Henry raised six children, all going on to college and establishing professional careers. As the children grew up and began to leave home, she volunteered for the Red Cross, working in their disaster services area. Upon Henry’s retirement, the two of them took to the roads in an Air Stream trailer, seeing parts of the country they had always wanted to see and some parts they didn’t. After Henry’s death in 1979, Rose lived with her sister, Helen Ballard Wasson, until Helen moved to a nursing home where she died in 2002. Nine years ago, she moved to Columbia to be closer to two of her daughters. She spent these last years of her life tending her gardens, turning bare, red clay to a cheery profusion of color and scent in all seasons of the year. When she wasn’t gardening, she was playing computer solitaire or watching "classic" movies. Rose was an avid reader, a trait she imbued in all her children; and she especially liked murder mysteries. Rose was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by a loving family: four daughters, Anna and husband Robert Campos of Metairie, LA, Mary and husband Francis Miksa of Austin, TX, Kathleen and husband Leonard Jones of Columbia, MS, and Helen and husband Chester Hunt also of Columbia, MS; and two sons, Stephen and wife Ann Spohrer of Baton Rouge, LA, and James Henry and wife Elisabeth Spohrer of El Sobrante, CA. She had 11 grandchildren, Betsy Campos Galit, Tim Campos, Laurie Campos, Jennifer Spohrer, Jill Spohrer, Béla Spohrer, Matt Jones, Josh Jones, Marguerite Halphen, Katie Halphen, and Jonna Halphen. She also had two great-grandchildren, Nate Galit and Elijah Galit, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Saturday June 9, 2007 10:30 AM until religious services at 12:30 PM in the funeral home chapel celebrated by Rev. Vic Messina. Interment will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park
