ELIZABETH MORRIS ODOM Golden Funeral Home of Bastrop, Inc. Bastrop, LA Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Morris Odom, 88, of Bastrop, LA are scheduled for 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Ingram and Dr. L.H. McCollough officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, (Ruston, LA), under the direction of Golden Funeral Home. Mrs. Odom, a retired teacher from the Morehouse Parish School System, longtime member and choir member of First Baptist Church passed away, July 30, 2007 at Morehouse General Hospital. She recieved her BS, MA and Library Science Certification from Louisiana Tech University. Mrs. Odom taught eleven years at Westside Elementary, three years as Librarian at Bastrop Junior High School, and six years as Librarian at Bastrop High School. She was past President of her teachers Sorority (Kappa Kappa Iota) and once received the Educator of the Year Award from the Morehouse Parish Teachers Association. Mrs. Odom is also a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Morehouse Parish. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Odom Pincus and husband, Howard of West Palm Beach, FL; two grandchildren, David Russell Minchew of Baton Rouge, LA, and Daniel Royce Minchew of Atlanta, GA; and, a great-grandson, Christian Raymond Minchew of Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Odom was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett and Adeline Terrell Morris; husband, Royce William Odom; brothers and sisters, Charles Morris, Richard Morris, Lorraine Marshall and William Morris.
EVELYN CHAVIS West Monroe, LA Mrs. Evelyn Chavis passed away July 6, 2007, preceded in death by her husband, Mr. V. L. Chavis, who owned and operated Chavis Floor Service (early 1940's to 1963). She is survived by three daughters: Jennifer Fox (Buck), Carole Gurley (Mike); and, Vikki Troudt (Gary). They were blessed with seven grandchildren, and with seven great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 4, 2007, at 3:00 PM at Hasley Cemetery, behind the gazebo.
WALLACE W. LEE Mulhearn Funeral Home West Monroe, Louisiana Services for Mr. Wallace W. Lee, 82, of West Monroe, will be at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 1, 2007 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe, LA with Dr. Lionel Crowell officiating. Interment will follow at Hasley Cemetery. Mr. Lee was born in Monroe, LA on July 20, 1925 and passed away in West Monroe, LA on July 30, 2007. Mr. Lee was in the United States Army during World War II, and he received many medals including the Purple Heart. He owned Lee's Curb Market since 1952 and Lee's Produce in the West Monroe Farmers' Market. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vena and Florine Lee; and, two brothers, Clyde and Vena, Jr. Mr. Lee is survived by his wife, Reitha J. Lee; daughters, Ann Rendon and Betty Baxter and husband Johnny; sons, Warren Lee and wife, Billie and Ricky Lee and wife, Nancy; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. GERTRUDE BRAUER SMITH Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Road Monroe, LA A service of celebration for the life of Mrs. Gertrude Brauer Smith, 92, will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 4, 2007, at First Presbyterian Church, Monroe, LA, with Dr. Allison Moody officiating. Interment will be by family ceremony at the Columbarium in the Memorial Garden of First Presbyterian Church under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Mrs. Smith was born December 30, 1914 in Corpus Christi, TX and passed away July 24, 2007 in Monroe. Mrs. Smith loved gardening, cooking and spending time with her extended family. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Monroe, the Monroe Garden Club, and a volunteer for the Louisiana Training Institute. An avid animal lover, she was also a member and volunteer for the Ouachita Humane Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Albert (Bill) Smith; and, sister, Alice Brauer Carbrey. Mrs. Smith is survived by her nephew, William Lee Carbrey, Jr. and wife, Marguerite, of Slidell, LA; niece, Elizabeth Carbrey Weaver and husband, Ron of Georgetown, TX; grandnieces, Caitlin, Kristin, and Caroline Carbrey, and Erin and Anna Weaver; and, brother-in-law, Lee Carbrey, Sr. of Monroe, as well as numerous other friends. Oliver, Pastor Officiating I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the Righteous Judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 OBITURARY Sister Susie Atkins Wade was born August 23, 1919 in Wisner, LA to the union of the late Henry Atkins, Sr. and Susie Scott Atkins. God saw a need to call her home on Sunday, July 29, 2007 at St. Francis Medical Center. She accepted Christ at the young age of eleven, and united with the Holly Grove Baptist Church of Wisner, LA under the leadership of the late Reverend Martin Cooper. She relocated to Monroe, LA, where she united with the St. Paul Baptist Church and remained until her health hindered her ability to attend services. "Madear", or "Pouah", as she was affectionately known, was employed at Airport Coffee Shop in Monroe, LA for over forty-five years. "Madear", an excellent cook, was dedicated to God, her family and life. Her laugh could light up your day. One of six siblings, two brothers: Henry Atkins, Jr. and Junior Atkins, three sisters: Viretta Heckard, Leola Jackson and Beatrice Williams, preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Viney Johnson of Sicily I sland, LA and Dianne Cole (Wendell), Monroe, LA; one son, Robert Bingham (Augustine), Baton Rouge, LA; and, a devoted companion, Perry Lee; twenty grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; eleven great-great-grandchildren; and, a loving host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mr. Houston, a retired Baptist Minister and Nursing Home Owner, passed away on August 1, 2007. He was a graduate of NE LA State College and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Born in Laurel, MS, he grew up in Baskin, LA. He was the former owner of Riverside Nursing Home and North Monroe Healthcare, and was pastor at several churches in Louisiana. He also worked many years as a Lab Technician at St. Francis Hospital. He and his wife served as house parents at the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home. He devoted his life in service to others. He is survived by his son, Curt Houston; daughter-in-law, Misti Houston; son, Ken Houston and wife, Tina; his beloved grandchildren, Candice, Dixon, Vicki, Ryan, and Summer; great- grandchild, Joshua Stephenson; his stepmother, Pauline Houston; sister, Audrey Lee; and brothers, Gerald, Glenn and Vernon Houston. Mr. Houston was preceded in death by his beloved wife Elouise, and his beloved grandson, Joshua. Mr. James was born March 29, 1927 in Memphis, TN and passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at his home in Bastrop. Mr. James was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Arvin James and Alma Louise Meyer; his brother, Erich William James; and, his son, Jesse Arvin James, III. He is survived by his wife, Jean May, of Bastrop; his son, Gordon Lee James and wife, Susan Matheny, of West Monroe, LA; his daughter, Patricia Louise (Lisa) Spikes and husband, Dennis, of Bastrop, LA; his son, Glenn Richard James and wife, Monisa Thompson, of Baton Rouge, LA; and, seven grandchildren: Anna Marie James, Jessica Leigh James, Matt Spikes, Erich William Spikes, Adam Lee Spikes, Emma Kay James, and Benjamin Thompson James. Mr. James grew up in Memphis, where he attended Christian Brothers High School. In 1950, he graduated from Vanderbilt University with his B.A. in English. In March, 1951, he married his wife of over fifty years, Jean May. A Corporal in the U.S. Army, he worked as a Public Information Officer in Japan from 1951-1953. Mr. James worked as a sportswriter/announcer in Cleveland, MS, serving as the sports announcer for Delta State University for several years. He published feature articles in, " Field & Stream ", " Sports Afield ", and " Southern Living , and in 1965, he was named Sportswriter of the Year by the Mississippi Wildlife Federation. He was an avid fisherman who spent much of his spare time on the water. In 1968, he moved to Bastrop, LA, where he spent many happy years fishing and spending time with his grandchildren and his wonderful wife. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, "Dadoo", as he is affectionately known to his grandchildren, will be dearly missed. The family wishes to thank Dr. Mike Smith, the employees of MediStar Home Health, the employees of Premier Hospice, and the employees of True Care Home Health. Mrs. Eloise Kirk, a longtime resident of Farmerville, LA passed away on July 31, 2007; from a debilitating illness. "Miss Eloise" and her husband, Thomas Kirk, retired in Farmerville, back in 1978, from Orange, CA. After selling their very successful trucking business in California, the Kirks relocated to Union Parish because of its rural setting and the wonderful people, strong in their Christian faith. Mrs. Kirk was a devoted Christian, a Sunday School teacher for her Methodist denomination, and a strong supporter for many Christian ministries throughout the United States. Her financial support for these ministries extended beyond our country, in particular, her staunch support for Christian missionaries and their work in Israel. Miss Eloise was a kind, compassionate, and industrious woman of "faith", a shining example of Christian values to her family, friends, and all who knew her. LAWRENCE EARL THOMPSON Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe, Louisiana Funeral services for Lawrence Earl Thompson, USN (ret), a resident of Eros, LA will be at 11:00 AM on Monday August 6, 2007, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Eros, LA with Dr. Scott Thompson officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove cemetery in Eros, LA under the direction of the Kilpatrick Funeral Home of West Monroe. Death occurred on Saturday, August 4, 2007 after a long struggle with cardio-pulmonary disease. He was born May 3, 1922, in Calhoun, LA. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruby Mardell Morehead Thompson. He graduated from Okaloosa School in Ouachita Parish. A World War II (WWII) veteran, he was a proud "Tin Can" sailor, serving aboard destroyers in the Pacific Theater. He fought in naval battles to regain the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, and the Philippines. Enemy action sank or severely damaged two of the ships, USS Porter (DD-356) and USS Fletcher (DD-445), on which he served. Another ship, the USS Perkins (DD-377), was cut in two by an Australian troop carrier. His service in WWII is memorialized in the book Fading Warriors by Monroe author, Lee Estes. After the war, he pursued a career in the US Navy, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He served as a radioman aboard several ships based at ports in Norfolk, VA, Charleston, SC, and Panama City, FL, before becoming an instructor in the Navy's primary training school for radioman in San Diego, CA. Upon retirement from the Navy, he farmed and operated the old Cadeville Store. He later worked at the Agriculture Extension Service Building on Cypress Street in West Monroe. Earl was a Deacon and active member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in west Ouachita Parish. He was a lifelong "ham radio" enthusiast (callsign WA5FLR) and was known to many "hams" in Northeast LA. Mr. Thompson is survived by a sister and three children: son Stanley Earl Thompson resides on the family farm near Eros; son Edgar Dale Thompson and wife Laurie Lightner Thompson live in Dallas TX; daughter Phyllis Ann Thompson Brode lives with her husband Theodore Hamilton "Ted" Brode III in West Monroe. His sister, Cecile Louise Thompson Fowler Saylor, lives with husband Ken Saylor in West Ouachita Parish. Layburn, 82, of Hendersonville, North Carolina died Tuesday, July 31, at Four Seasons Hospice Elizabeth House after a lengthy illness. Born in DeLand, Florida, she was a daughter of the late Charles Douglas and Mary Tribble Waring. She was raised in Metuchen, New Jersey, and had lived in Monroe, LA for 26 years and Lakeland, FL for 6 years before moving to Hendersonville, NC in 1984. Starting as a Brownie Scout in 1932, she spent over 40 years with the GSA. She was a 1947 graduate of Douglass College for Women (now a branch of Rutgers University). She had worked for the department of Social Services in Florida as a social worker for 6 years and retired before moving to Hendersonville. A very active member of St. James Episcopal Church in Hendersonville, she was also a member of the Order of the Daughters of the King, the Episcopal Church Women and volunteered at the Thursday Thrift Shop. Mrs. Layburn is survived by her husband of 60 years, Donald W. Layburn, Sr.; five children, Donald W. Layburn, Jr. of Hendersonville, Bruce W. Layburn of Harvey, LA, Meribeth Fisher of White Plains, New York, Robert D. Layburn of Sanford, FL and Linda J. Douglas of Monroe, LA; a sister, Jane Lewis of East Haddam, Connecticut, 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Jones, who died Sunday, August 5th, will be held at McGuire United Methodist Church, West Monroe, at 10:00am on Wednesday, August 8th followed by a graveside service at Camp Ground Cemetery, Bienville, Louisiana with the Rev. Rick Willis, pastor of First United Methodist Church, West Monroe and Bro. Waymond Warren, pastor of Fair Park Baptist Church, West Monroe officiating. Mrs. Jones was a member of McGuire and a former member of First United Methodist Church, West Monroe, where she served as church secretary for twenty-three years and was a long-time member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Chapel Choir. She also served on the Evangelism Committee and assisted with the Senior Program. Bobbie was born on May 30, 1920, to William Warren and Willie Blume Horton. She was the granddaughter of the late J. Henry and Appie McInnis Blume, a pioneer family of Castor, LA. Bobbie will be buried at Camp Ground Cemetery near Bienville, LA, the small town where she grew up and which she loved so dearly. As a youngster she attended the Bienville Methodist Episcopal Church South, where she was baptized in a summer revival in 1932. She graduated from Bienville High School in 1937 and later from Meadows Draughn Business College in Shreveport, LA. Her secretarial career began in 1941 and ended in 1988, when she retired to enjoy her grandson. She married Travis B. Jones on April 5, 1943. Both were members of founding families of Bienville Parish. Travis was in the Air Force, so Bobbie traveled with him to various states and Air Bases during World War II. These years were special even though the war was raging. Travis preceded Bobbie in death. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jan Jones McCardle, son-in-law Charles H. McCardle, Jr.; and grandson Jonathan C. McCardle, all of West Monroe, and nephew Murphy Blume Horton of Shreveport. Pallbearers will be Herbert Otwell, Blythe McDuffie, Joey Telano, Gary Stringer, Bryce Humphries and Brod Kennedy. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 7th from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Kilpatrick's Funeral Home in West Monroe. Mr. Hochstetler was born in Jasonville, IN to Leonard and Donna Hochstetler. He graduated from Wylie High School in Terre Haute, IN and then graduated from Rose Holman Institute of Technology, also in Terre Haute, with a chemical engineering degree. He married Frances Olive Clough on July 30, 1943. After college, Mr. Hochstetler served in the United States Army in the European campaign of World War II. Upon returning from the war, he worked for Commercial Solvents in Terre Haute and then in Sterlington, LA. He was a 60-year resident of Monroe, LA. Mr. Hochstetler was known for his expertise in design, construction and operation of anhydrous ammonia facilities. He retired from Commercial Solvents in the early 1990s but remained a company consultant for several years. Mr. Hochstetler and his wife Frances raised three boys in their Monroe home. He was a devoted Neville High School football and band parent, and remained a Tigers fan long after his sons had graduated. The Hochstetler home was always open to their sons' friends, and they hosted countless postgame get-togethers. Mr. Hochstetler was active in many community organizations such as St. Paul's United Methodist Church, the State Board for the Louisiana Lions Club Crippled Children's Camp, and the Ouachita Council on Aging. He and Mrs. Hochstetler were avid square dancers, and were fortunate to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in 1993. In their retirement, they enjoyed traveling to visit their grandchildren. Mr. Hochstetler is preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his sons, William Henson Hochstetler and wife Cindy of Thibodeaux, LA; David James Hochstetler and wife Betty of Shreveport, LA; and Robert Henry Hochstetler and wife Laurie of McAllen, TX; and grandchildren, Meghan, Michael, Meredith, Morgan, Brooke and Mason. KATE FLANAGAN STEWART Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe, LA Kate Flanagan Stewart, 96, passed away on August 8, 2007. Kate was born August 21, 1910 in Vaiden, MS, the daughter of Daniel Tobias Flanagan and Ella Burden Flanagan. She moved to the Monroe area as a child and resided here for the remainder of her life, graduating from high school in 1928 and Louisiana Normal College in Natchitoches in 1932. She taught at Crosley in West Monroe during the 1930s and 1940s. In 1940 she married Dr. J.C. Stewart, then a well-known West Monroe dentist, who later served on the Ouachita Parish School Board. In 1958, when West Monroe Junior High opened, she was one of the original members of its faculty; she taught there until her retirement in 1972. As a teacher she touched so many lives, in some cases teaching several generations in the same family. History and literature were her true loves. She was a voracious reader and an active participant for years in the Altrurian Book Club. She was also a member of the Chief Tusquahoma Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a charter member of Memorial Presbyterian Church in West Monroe and later joined Highland Presbyterian Church where she had served as an elder and as a lifelong member of the Women of the Presbyterian Church, U.S. Kate is survived by her son, Toby R. Stewart, and her daughter-in-law, Becky Stewart, of Houston, TX and also by her stepdaughter Myrta Reace Persons of Dallas, TX, and step daughter-in-law Marcile Stewart of Ruidoso, NM. She is also survived by three step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her step-son Roy Stewart, and two sisters, Phyllis F. Cozine and Dorothy Flanagan. The family expresses thanks to the caregivers at Christus St. Joseph Assisted Living and Nursing Home in Monroe where Kate resided for the last years of her life, and extends very special gratitude to Sister Elizabeth. Visitation will be held Friday, August 10, 2007 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe. Services are scheduled at the funeral home at 10:00 AM Saturday. La'Nita had a passion for Nursing and her patients loved her. La'Nita loved God, her children and her family. La'Nita was a member of the Star Hill Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, LA. ANNE STEPHENS RHYMES Kilpatrick Funeral Home Monroe, LA A private graveside service was held for Mrs. Anne Stephens Rhymes on August 10, 2007 at the Rhymes Cemetery. Father William "Bill" Estes officiated. Mrs. Rhymes passed away on August 8, 2007. A Holy Communion service was held in St. Mary's Chapel of Grace Episcopal Church for family members and a few close friends preceding the graveside at Rhymes cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe. Mrs. Rhymes was a native of Marietta, GA and the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Edward Stephens. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Howard Creswell Stephens, and one brother, Williams Pinkney Stephens. Mrs. Rhymes was christened, confirmed and married at St. James Episcopal Church in Marietta, GA. She was educated in the Marietta Public Schools and Ashley Hall in Charleston, SC. Upon graduation, she attended Sophie Newcomb College and Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. In 1959, she married Dr. Raphael Ray Rhymes, Jr. of Monroe, LA. Services were at St. James Episcopal Church which were officiated by the Rev. Joseph T. Walker. The Rt. Rev. Bishop Randolph W. Claiborne extended his personal wedding blessings to Anne and Ray. Both clergy are now deceased. Mrs. Rhymes was affiliated with Grace Episcopal Church in Monroe since the 1960's. Mrs. Rhymes is survived by her husband, Dr. Ray Rhymes of Monroe, LA; one daughter, Allyson Rhymes, of Houston, TX; three sons, Ray Rhymes, III and his wife, Carol and their children, Raph and Savannah, Thomas Edward Rhymes and wife, Donna and Randolph Stephens Rhymes and wife, Krista and their son, Harrison. She has one niece, Mrs. James Spell and one nephew, Eddie Stephens, both of Marietta, GA.
