EVELYN VIVIAN WOOTEN ROEDER Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA Evelyn Vivian Wooten Roeder passed away at the age of 85 in San Diego, CA. She chose to die at home, where she lived with her niece, in hospice, after diagnosis with lung cancer. She remained with her beloved puppies and with those who loved her dearly. She survived 33 days after diagnosis. She remained active until the very end taking charge of her nieces household, flower gardens and pets. She made a house a home. She was preceded in death by her husband Ambrose Ellis Roeder, her sister Lucille Wooten Hammett, her mother Annie Pearl West Wooten and her father William Reid Wooten. Vivian was born in a railroad camp at Clarks, LA while her father was working in a timber crew. Vivian was raised and attended school in Monroe, LA. During World War II, Vivian and her mother rode a bus to San Diego, CA where they both obtained employment with Consolidated Aircraft. That was the first time either woman had traveled beyond the southern states, worn slacks or had jobs as "Rosie the Riveter". Vivian moved on to Hollywood, CA, attended night school to obtain secretarial skills and became a hotel reservationist at the Hotel Knickerbocker. Thereafter, she was hired by the movie star, Gene Autry as his private secretary. She moved to Las Vegas, NV to work for Mr. Autry as he developed resort hotels in the fifties. It was there, she met her husband Amby Roeder, was married and moved to New York City. There she settled into a lovely home at Croton on the Hudson, bred and showed AKC German Shepherds, became active in the local art community, and was an avid nature lover. Vivian had no issue, and is survived by her niece, Mary Joan Fleming of Reno, NV; her nephew, Fred U. Hammett III (Joette), and youngest niece, with whom she resided, Sharon Diane Hammett Hiddleson of San Diego, CA; and many great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her long time Croton neighbor and best friend, Mary Sender; and her Columbia, TN friends, Faye Hartsfield and Al Woody. Our Aunt Vivian will be remembered for the important gifts she bestowed upon us. She possessed a keen sense of humor, a love of history and literature, was a creative artist and potter, social and political activist, and a lover of gardening, cooking, quilting and antiques. She was self reliant and could perform most of her own home improvements and repairs. There was not a critter or stray lost in the woods of the upper Hudson who did not find their way to the door of Vivian who gave them love, shelter, food and helped find them a new home. Her most beloved animal friends were Smoky, the German Shepard and Chatty Cat. Her fortunate nieces and nephews will recall summers of fishing, hiking, taking a dip in the local swimming hole, receiving gifts of dogs, rabbits, dolls, water colors, oil paints and cowboy boots — she was the best Aunt — always fun, energetic, self reliant - kind and compassionate. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe, LA. Services and viewing will be held Saturday, November 4, 2006, 10:00AM at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel, Hwy 80 East Monroe, LA. Rev. Gerald Lewis will preside at the service. Vivian returns to her Southern family and will be buried beside her beloved sister Lucille Wooten Hammett, in the Rose Hill Section of the park. After services, the family invites you to celebrate Vivian's life at the home of Delores West Humphries, 205 Walton St, Monroe, LA. Her nieces and nephews now reflect and say with a smile: "There goes Aunt Vivian with Smoky and Chatty Cat for a walk in the woods — we know she's happy - but we know her arms will always be around us" Online Registry/condolences: www.mulhearnfuneralhome.com

He remained an avid gardener, growing some of the most beautiful vegetables in the area, and consistently providing the rest of us fresh peas, okra and tomatoes to enjoy. Pop loved to work, but he never referred to it that way.. To him, fishing, cooking, mowing the grass, building sheds, bricking a patio - anything physical - was living. He felt if you stood still you were cheating God of the life you had been given. And though he was small in stature, he was tough as nails. There were many days when he put us to work, and was the last man standing. Some of our family's fondest memories are those of enjoying hot water cornbread, hot biscuits and pecan pie, served by Pop and Fannie during many Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners over the years. His home and heart were warm and open to everyone. All he asked was for you to pull up a chair and share. He was and remains an example for all of us.
