Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her husband, Bert Owens. Paul Standley Ransom, 81 of Monroe. Services for Mr. Paul Standley Ransom of
Monroe, LA will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, January 10, 2005 at the First United
Methodist Church on Loop Road in Monroe, LA with Reverends Terry Love and Larry
Stafford officiating. Prior to this service, interment will be in the Mulhearn
Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington
Road Monroe.
Mr. Ransom was born on October 4, 1924, and passed away at his home on January
8, 2005. He graduated from Ouachita Parish High School in Monroe and attended
Northeast Junior College, now the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He graduated
from Louisiana States University in Agricultural Economics. Mr. Ransom enlisted
in the Army Air Corps and served a tour of duty in World War II in Burma, where
he flew the Himalayan Hump as a ball turret gun ner. He was selected to fly
medicine to the Dali Lama. For most of his life, Mr. Ransom farmed in Ouachita
Parish, producing cotton, rice, soybeans, and Ransom Sweets (Onions). He also
raised cattle. Mr. Ransom was a dynamic civic leader, not only locally but also
at the state and national levels. He was Past President of the Monroe Jaycees;
Past President of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce; a member of the Monroe Rotary
Club; Past President of the Ouachita Parish Farm Bureau; served on the Board
of Di rectors of Central Bank and First Commerce Bank; served on the Board of
Directors of Union Oil Mill; and was co owner of Bayou Gin. Mr. Ransom served
on the Board of Gulf South Research Institute for design of the Louisiana Superdome,
he served on the Board of Directors of the Cattleman's Association and served
as First Vice President of the Louisiana Farm Bureau from 1963-1994. He was
a member of the National Cattleman's Association and the National Cotton Council.
He was elected to serve as a delegate on the board of Cotton Incorporated, the
governing body of cotton farmers in the United States for research and marketing.
Mr. Ransom enjoyed people and had many varied in terests. He was a dedicated
duck hunter whose expertise was duck calling, though he turned to salt water
fishing later in life. He was a lifelong tennis player. He was famous for his
barbecue. He also enjoyed meeting every Wednesday for lunch with the Old Boys,
his good friends from high school. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Fraternity,
President of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and President of Monroe Educational Foundation
at River Oaks School. Mr. Ransom was a member of the Men's Bible Class at First
United Methodist Church in Monroe. He was preceded in death by his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Ransom, a pioneer family of Monroe and West Monroe and a uncle,
John Clement Ransom. A dedicated husband, father, and brother, Mr. Ransom is
survived by his, wife Adele; his son, Burg Waddill Ransom and his wife, Carol;
one sister, Jo Ann Pipes and husband, Dick; one niece, Nancy Bancroft and husband,
Speed; and three nephews, Ransom Pipes, Rich ard Pipes, and Wesley Pipes.
Honorary Pallbearers are the members of the Old Boys, Carl Tidwell, Gene Worthen,
Robert Wood, B.K. Fluker, Ben Mar shall; members of the Men's Bible Class; Charles
Venable, Sam Rubin, Phillip Wemple, Sal Pettito, Beto Nawas, Johnny Gunter,
C.R. Russell and Nathaniel Reed. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00
PM Sunday January 9, 2005 at Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Road Monroe.

The Family of Thomas (Tonto) W. Fant would like to give our thanks and express
our sincere gratitude to all the people that assisted and helped us during the
recent loss of our loved one.
We would like to thank the family and friends for the flowers and memorials,
the cards, visit and calls. We would like to send a special thanks to the friends
that took the time to prepare and deliver food.
Tonto spent the last few years at the NELA War Veterans Home in Monroe and we
would like to thank the staff for seeing to his needs. We appreciate the efforts
of the ER Staff of North Monroe Hospital.
We would like to thank Tom Mulhearn for helping with all the arrangements for
the funeral and the staff of Mulhearn in West Monroe for taking time to work
with us during this time. We would like to thank Pastor David Uth for the wonderful
service.
Tonto retired from the Army in 1975 with 28 years in service, He was also a
Mason and a Shriner. It was his wish to have a Military and Masonic funeral
service. We appreciate the Soldiers of the Honor Guard that served in the graveside
service and honored Tonto's service to his Country. We would like to thank Ray
Herbert and the Masons of the Masonic Lodge #419 for performing the Masonic

David Elliott was born April 7, 1923, in Webb City, MO. He passed away January
9, 2005, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Mr. Elliott was an Elder Emeri tus of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),
he was a member of Graham Surghnor Masonic Lodge #383, and he was also a member
of the Order of the Arrow of the Boy Scouts. Mr. Elliott also was a World War
II veteran with the 15th Air Force. Mr. Elliott was owner and operator of his
own busi ness, Elliott Scale Co.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Elliott; their five children, Charlie Elliott
and his wife Jackie, Cheryl Roach, Janet Williams and her husband Jim all of
Monroe, LA; Thom Elliott of New Orleans, LA; and Phillip Elliott of Scituate,
Mass. He is also survived by twelve grand children and four great grand children.
Pallbearers will be Billy Fleming, Charles Sanders, Jimmy Hickey, John Tremaine,
Eddie Barnes, and Jim Padgett. Honorary pallbearers will be Elders and Deacons
of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Eddie Wooten, Johnny Willard,

Mrs. McHardy was born in 1905 on Christmas Day and died on January 8, 2005 in
Pla no, Texas where she had lived for the past year and a half. She graduated
from high school in Pollock, Louisiana and attended college in Sherman, Texas
at Kidd Key Women's College. She received her degree after a career as director
of the Wel fare Department in Caldwell Parish. At that time she began her next
career as a first grade teacher with the Caldwell Parish Schools.
She is remembered by many past and present Caldwell Par ish residents as their
favorite teacher, who instilled in them a love of learning. In 1963, she retired
from teaching and moved to Alice, Texas for a year where she in dulged her passion
for art and painting by returning to college for classes at Texas A and I. She
also took private art clas ses and was a member of sev eral groups that went
to various picturesque spots in the hill country of Texas to paint.
In 1964, she returned to Cald well Parish to live but embarked on her next career
as a Disaster Worker for the American Red Cross. For the next ten years she
was available to go wher ever she was needed when dis aster struck. Those that
she as sisted and those she worked with through the Red Cross were very appreciative
of her empathy and expertise.
Mrs. McHardy was an active participant in her community, wherever she was. In
Columbia, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and its Service
Guild.
She was a charter member of the Garden Club, belonged to several bridge clubs,
and was a member, and held several of fices in Delta Kappa Gamma.
During the last year and half of her life she lived at The Water ford in Plano,
Texas and was well known there for her friend liness and kindness to all. Her
hobbies included a lifelong love of travel, learning, art, and bridge.
She was a modern southern lady and in many ways ahead of her time. Although
she had no children of her own she had many children including her nieces and
nephews and their families and her students, many of whom still keep in touch
and visit.
She was preceded in death by her parents: J.N. and Sally Torry Warner, her husband:
Norman A. McHardy and her brother: A.B. "Bo" Warner all of Colum bia.
Also preceding her were a brother: Kirk Warner and his wife: Amanda of Wisner
and a brother: George Warner and his wife: Louise "Boots" of Lake
Charles.
She is survived by her sis terinlaw: Louise Sowers Warner, her niece: Betty
Warner Hopper and her husband: Ray of Plano, Texas. Also her nieces: Jane Warner
Brown of Shreveport, Mary Warner Vizzier and her husband: Darwin of Al exandria,
Sarah Warner of Houston, Texas, Susan W. Lyssey of Houston, Texas and Kerry
Warner Morgan of Hum ble, Texas, Also two nephews: Ken Warner and his wife:
Cathy of Coppell, Texas and Kirk Warner of Breaux Bridge, LA. She has a host
of great nieces and nephews as well as their children who will miss her very
much.
Pallbearers will be Dr. E.D. Coates, Ed Rowan, Darwin Vizzier, Alan Hopper,
Ken Warner and Kirk Warner.
Honorary pallbearers are Jim Turner, James Hopper, E.L. Richard, Johnny James
and Uriah Youngblood.

Arlan Rawls was born on De cember 13, 1924 in West Mon roe, LA and departed
this life on January 10, 2005 at 80 years of age. He was a faithful member of
Christ Church for over 25 years where he served as an Elder as well as an Executive
Board member. Arlan served our nation as a Marine Corps. Paratrooper in World
War II. He also served our community as a member of the West Monroe Lions Club,
Greater Ouachita Lions Club, Glenwood Hospital Board of Di rectors and as a
Squadron Commander of the Civil Air Pa trol. Arlan served on the Ouach ita Parish
Police Jury for 32 years and was proud to have served as president of the Loui
siana Police Jury Association.
Following his retirement from the Louisiana Gas Company af ter 47 years of dedicated
serv ice, Arlan pursued his passion for flying and obtained his pri vate pilots
license and later re ceived his Instrument Flight Rules rating.
Arlan is preceded in death by his parents, Eli and Samantha Rawls, three sisters
and three brothers.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Betty Marine Anding Rawls; one
daughter, Arlene Coley and husband Joe; one son, Wade Rawls; three grandchildren,
Christy Owen and husband Larry, Carlan Coley and Chase Coley; and three greatgrandchildren,
all of West Monroe, LA.
Pallbearers are Ernest Anding, Robert Boughton, Jerry Hicks, J. D. Manning,
Gene Norton and Roy Saucer.

Rayville, LA on December 8, 1923. His parents were Edmund Hobdy Carter, Sr.
and Sallie Carter. He was raised in Sterlington, LA, graduated from Ouachita
Parish High School and attended Northeast Louisiana Junior College. As part
of the "Greatest Generation", Ednumd served for three years in the
U.S.Army, building bridges in France and Germany during World War II. After
the war, he returned to Louisiana Tech and graduated with a degree in mechanical
engineering in 1948. He retired in 1984 after working for thirty-six years for
United Gas Pipe Line Company. Edmund served as a deacon at Lakeshore Baptist
Church in Monroe, Louisiana and at Shreve City Baptist Church, where he retired
as Deacon Emeritus. He was a lifetime member of the barons of the Magna Carta
and the sons of the American Revolution. Edmund is survived by his wife of nearly
fifty-six years, JoAnn Carter; two sons, Charles Edmund Carter of Dallas TX
and David Warren Carter of Bellingham, WA; a daughter, Nancy Carter Molinaro
and her husband, John of Shreveport, LA; two granddaughters, Ashley Carter of
Dallas, TX and Kimberly Molinaro of Shreveport LA and special family friends,
Peggy Krenz and her son Linus of Bellingham, WA.

Margie retired from Lewis & Company in Ruston after twen tyfive years of
employment. After retirement, she volun teered at her church and as a Pink Lady
at Lincoln General Hospital. With the aging proc ess, dementia became promi
nent, especially during the latter years of her life. Although her memory was
failing, her South ern charm common to our Steel Magnolia's prevailed. She re
mained happy and full of love for her family. Pallbearers will be Nathan Leigh,

in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Haste was born on Sep tember 16, 1946 in
Monroe, LA and was raised in West Monroe, LA. She died on January 12, 2005 at
North Monroe Medical Center. She attended Lenwil School before West Monroe Junior
High and West Monroe High School. Peggy was always a good student, eager to
learn. She was in the Honor Society in high school and was awarded a scholarship
to Northeast Col lege where she studied nursing for two and one half years be
fore changing to Elementary Education. After graduating as an Honor Student
in spring of 1970, she was married to Ervin Haste. Af ter teaching school three
and a half years, she started working at the Louisiana State Employ ment Office
in 1974 where she was employed until disability re tirement in 1999. Peggy became
a Christian at an early age. She was a mem ber of First Baptist Church of West
Monroe at the time of her death.
Survivors include her hus band, Ervin Haste, her mother, Margie Puckett Douglas,
her brother, Charles Douglas and his wife Barbara and their sons, William and
Joe, uncle, Eugene Puckett, aunt, Evelyn Russell, motherinlaw, Christeen Haste,
brotherinlaw, Larry Haste and wife Ruth, sisterinlaw, Shirley Weems and husband
Conrad, brotherinlaw, Darrell Haste, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a
host of friends.

sister, Zelda Mae Dean Cloud; broth ers: Thelbert, Ferris, Fred, and A.J. Dean.

and witness will long be remembered as her greatest gift.

She is survived by her son: Kyle Mathus of West Monroe and daughter: Katie Mathus
both of West Monroe, LA; aunts: Nancy Tompkins and husband Joe of West Monroe;
Garry Gray and wife Cheryl of Dublin, GA, Patricia Morgan and husband Johnny
of Choudrant, LA; Special aunt: Shirley Young and husband Jimmy Dale of Co lumbia,
Lynn Tolbird and hus band Mike of West Monroe; Jonita Kinman and husband Jimmy
of West Monroe; grand parents: Frances Gray; W.B. and Bea Adams, numerous family
members and friends and "special " new addition Dawson Tolbird.
Kimberly will be remembered by her family and friends for her bubbly personality
and lust for life. She was an amazing moth er and committed to her children.
She was truly loved by everyone who met and knew her.
Many thanks are extended from her family to her caregivers, doctors and nurses
who were there for Kimberly during this very difficult time. Special thanks
to all of her family and friends for their love and support.

Mr. Stephens, a member of First United Pentecostal Church, a retired employee
of International Paper Company and most recently door greeter for Wal Mart in
Bastrop, passed away on January 13, 2005 at Morehouse General Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years Mary Rose Hogan Stephens; two daughters,
Retha Kitchens and husband Johnny of Ellisville, MS, Margaret Martin and husband
Robby of West Monroe, LA; son, Mike Stephens and wife Diane of Bastrop, LA;
sister, Pearl Wynn and husband Elmo of Start, LA; two brothers, George Alford
and wife Martha of Start, LA, Joe Alford and wife Linda of Windsor, MO; eleven
grandchil dren; fifteen great grandchil dren; numerous nieces, neph ews and
other extended family members. He is preceded in death by a son, Kenny Stephens.
Mr. Stephens was born June 15, 1924 in Forkville, MS, to Birdie Harvey and Daniel
Stephens. He later met and married Mary Rose Hogan on May 25, 1946 in Start,
LA. He served his country in the U. S. Navy during WWII and later in the U.
S. Army.
Mr. Stephens was very active and enjoyed working with his animals, gardening
and spend ing time with his grandchildren.

was born August 7, 1932 in Sicily Island, LA. He passed away Friday, January
14, 2005 at Riverland Medical Center Ferriday. He was a resident of Sicily Is
land, and a member of the Sicily Island First United Methodist Church. Mr. Sonny
was the former sheriff of Catahoula Par ish for sixteen years. Prior to his
years as a Sherriff he was a Louisiana State Trooper for 20 years. He was a
Veteran of the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
In addition to his Military and Law Enforcement career he was involved in the
Masonic Lodge Keystone #213 in Sicily Island, he obtained the 32 degree. He
was a member of the Louisiana Sheriff's Association, Lou isiana, Lousiana State
Trooper Association, and the American National Trooper Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents Enos and Lela Tarver Jackson.

He was a life member of the VFW where he was Commander for 4 years. In addition,

Dr. Clifton R. Tennison died in peaceful repose on January 13, 2005.
Born in Wellington TX, he lived in TX and LA until moving to Knoxville in January
2000. Edu cated at Wayland College (Plainview TX), Howard Payne College (Brownwood
TX), Southwestern Baptist Theologi cal Seminary (Ft. Worth TX), University of
Houston, and Northeast Louisiana University (Monroe), he earned the Master of
Theology degree from South western and received an honor ary Doctor of Divinity
degree from Howard Payne College.
He married Daphine Fern Hunn in 1943, and they shared a life of commitment to
Christian ministry for 58 years, until her death in 2001.
After being ordained in Idalou TX, his pastorates included Cashion Baptist Church
of Cashion TX, Central Baptist Church of Wichita Falls TX, First Baptist Church
of Shamrock TX, First Baptist Church of Ozona TX, Calvary Baptist Church of
Borger TX, First Baptist Church of Childress TX, Park Memorial Baptist Church
of Houston TX, and First Baptist Church of West Monroe LA, where he served for
29 years.
Dr. and Mrs. Tennison led worldwide tours with a spiritual focus for over 30
years, and conducted international mis sions, enriching their lives with many
deep friendships, most notably a Chinese family whose daughter, Nettie Ma, they
"adopted" and considered their own.
His first priority was his com mitment to his Lord and to bringing others to
salvation, fol lowed closely by his devotion to his wife, his love of family
and friends, and service to his churches and communities.
He served as President of the Louisiana Baptist Convention, on the Sunday School
Board of the Southern Baptist Conven tion, and as Chairman of the Home Mission
Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
He served on the Board of Trustees for Louisiana College and with numerous community
service groups advocating for children, health, and education.
He worked diligently for ethi cal practice in business and law, serving on the
Disciplinary Committee of the Louisiana Su preme Court and receiving hon ors
from a variety of civic and business groups.
He was a tireless shepherd whose teaching and living a life of forgiveness,
peace, love, hu mility, and harmony was recog nized and admired by people of
all faiths, all walks of life, and all races, rich and poor, healthy and ill,
free and incarcerated.
A former high school and col lege athlete, he was a big but gentle man who loved
children, gardening, travel, and friends, and whose joyful focus on Bible study,
prayer, worship, and mu sic was enhanced by his love of fellowship, community,
and wel coming acceptance.
He was a mentor to many who have gone on to assume posi tions of leadership
and service in education, medicine, govern ment, and the ministry.
Survivors include his daughter, Dr. Carol A. Williams, and her husband, John
T. Williams, of Baltimore MD; his son, Dr. Clifton R. Tennison, Jr., and his
wife, Nancy E. Tennison, of Knoxville; his grandchildren, Christina Wyskiel,
and her hus band, Matthew Wyskiel, of Bal timore, Tolliver Williams and his
wife, Melissa Williams, of Chap el Hill NC, James Tennison of Black River Falls
WI, and Michael Tennison of Knoxville; his greatgrandchildren, Jamie Wyskiel

Benton L. Irby, Jr., 43, of Kelly, LA, died on Sunday, January 16, 2005 following
a long ill ness.
He was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, R. A. "Bob"
Smith and Thelma Smith Huffman and Sadie and Ira Irby, Sr.An avid outdoorsman,
a tal ented musician, a free spirit with a loving heart, Ben faced lifes challenges
with persever ance and a sense of humor. He is survived by his parents, Ben
and Pat Irby of Olla; his stepgrandfather Clem Huffman of Winnfield and serveral
aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Friends will serve as pallbearers. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday,
January 18, 2005 from the Columbia Chapel of Riser Funeral Home. Rev. Keith
Thomas will officiate. In terment will follow in the old Bethel Cemetery at
Clarks, LA.

Mr. Joseph "Joe" Lenton Lewis, age 74, of West Monroe, went home to
be with his Lord and Savior on January 16, 2005, at the St. Francis Specialty
Hos pital following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Lewis was born December 29, 1930, in Vanceboro, North Carolina, the son
of Joseph Clifton and Minnie Bell Clark Lewis. He moved to Louisiana after serving
four years in the United States Air Force as part of the Air Police. He retired
from Louisiana Power and Light, where he worked for 33 years as a Me ter Man.
Mr. Joe was a faithful member and former deacon of Highland Baptist Church.
He continued to actively serve his church family in many leadership and sup
portive roles until his last ill ness.
Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his beloved first wife Frances Daniels Lewis,
his par ents, three brothers, and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife Cora Fayenette "Faye" Lewis; son Eric Clifton
Lewis of Eros, LA; son and daughterinlaw Daryl Duncan and Celina Lewis of Round
Rock, TX; son and daughterinlaw Thomas Lenton and Glenda Lewis of West Mon roe,
LA; grandchildren Aaron Thomas Lewis, Colin Seth Lewis, and Kaylea Francis Lewis;
sister Mildred Tripp of Newport, NC; sisterinlaw and husband Carol and Charles
Cook of Grand Cane, LA; broth erinlaw and wife Ted and Glo ria Daniels of Bentley,
LA; sis terinlaw Druese Lewis of Aus tin, TX; sisterinlaw and hus band Beverly
and Randy Elkins of Broken Arrow, OK; and a host of friends.
