In 1964, Mr. Gregory or Gregory as his friends and colleagues called him, started the first Canine Patrol Unit in Ouachita Parish. His dog, "Rock" was responsible for many apprehensions and accomplishments as noted by the Monroe News Star. He was later killed in action, which was a very moving moment with Gregory and Sheriff Bailey Grant as they buried "Rock" in quite a fitting ceremony next to Gregory's house. In 1969, he graduated from the FBI Academy headed by J. Edgar Hoover. His graduation ceremony has a picture of Mr. Gregory shaking hands with J. Edgar Hoover and President Richard Nixon. He returned to Ouachita Parish and was Sheriff Grant's Superintendent until he retired in 1980. One of his favorite accomplishments was his work with the Boy Scout Explorer Post under the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office. Gregory personally trained deputies for service at Ouachita Parish for a number of years. Later as his work began to be noted, other parishes led him to initiate and start the North Delta Police Academy, which he headed for five years. Since his retirement, this program continues to operate training some of the finest police officers in Louisiana. His legacy lives on.
