Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at the Holum Baptist Church, east of Grayson with
Rev. Jimmy Goodman officiating. Interment will follow in the Columbia Hill Cemetery.
Miss Edith was born in Lake Charles, LA and grew up in the Beauregard Parish
town of Merryville. Her parents were Benjamin Hawkins Carroll and Alice Van
Brooke Carroll. She was the last of six children. She graduated from LSU and
Iowa State University. She married Dr. Wren Causey and has lived in Columbia,
LA for almost sixty years.
Her surviving children are Wren Causey, Robin Causey, Emily McCarty, Sarah Wright
and Elizabeth Douglas. She has eighteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.
Miss Edith was a true conservationist. She loved nature and dedicated most of
her life to bringing nature's beauty into places of enjoyment. Many of the Parish
public places have her touch adorning them. She dedicated herself to keeping
Caldwell Parish clean, helping form the cleanest city contests throughout LA
under the McKeithen Administration, and served on the State Parks Commission.
She raised her children not to litter and always pick up others' litter. She
took care of God's creation.
Edith was a simple person with a servant's heart. She was the one in the background,
taking care that the events of life came off well. This poem written by her
mother, Alice, captures her essence:
"To Edith"
She's neither altogether good
Nor very, very clever
But fit for human nature's food,
Of simple thoughts and wholesome mood,
She's worth my best
endeavor.
She has never yet been
spoiled by praise,
Nor her failures beat her,
She's just herself in all her ways
And lives the truth throughout her days,
No matter how we treat her.
She's neither perfect nor
divine,
Nor have the fairies brought her,
But she ensnares this heart of mine,
She goes to my old head like wine,
Though just my youngest daughter.
Edith was an accomplished musician serving as church accompanist in many churches
of Caldwell Parish. Many of the grown mothers of Caldwell Parish are her GA's
and Girl Scouts, Brownies, and Garden Clubbers. She left a legacy of music throughout
her family having all her children playing instruments in the Parish schools
for thirty years. She patronized the arts in Caldwell and Ouachita Parishes
and was one of the Founders of the Louisiana Art and Fold Festival spending
innumerable hours making it work.
She was well rounded in her education and has written many horticultural manuscripts.
Respected in state-wide circles that include Health Care, Garden Clubs, and
National Beautification, serving on the State's Garden Club Judging Council.
