Subject: Help With A Mystery Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 16:00:07 PDT From: "Aaron Oglesbee" <oglesbee@hotmail.com> I'd like to find some information on my great-great grandfather. I believe his name is LEWIS OGLESBEE (or Oglesby). I can only trace my father's line (for sure) as far back as my great grandfather, WILLIAM W. OGLESBEE. Enter the mystery: I'd always been told that WILLIAM's father was killed in the civil war. However, WILLIAM's tombstone at Bethyl Cemetery in Jackson Parish says he was born in 1869. This raises some interesting possibilities, none of which I'm inclined to broach with my elders I suspect, though, that a man whose marriage is recorded in the same place as WILLIAM's marriage - LEWIS OGLESBEE - was his father. Possibly, after LEWIS and ELLEN MULLIN were married in 1866 (a year after LEWIS's release from POW status in Monroe), and around the time of WILLIAM's birth in 1868 or 1869, LEWIS lit a shuck for other pastures. I can find no record of divorce, death, or otherwise; he just disappears hence the family story of his civil war death. ELLEN MULLIN later married a man named COLE who raised William and his several half-siblings. Here's what I know for sure from documents I have sent for or found on the net: 1. An L.W. OGLESBY, PVT, CSA, a prisoner of war, was paroled at Monroe, La, on 9 June 1865. 2. LEWIS W. OGLESBEE, a legal resident of Caldwell Parish, married ELLEN MULLIN(s) on 25 June, 1866. 3. WILLIAM was born 31 July, 1868 (1869?) at Jackson Parish. 4. WILLIAM married ELIZABETH FULLER on 18 June 1892 in Ouachita Parish. 5. WILLIAM died 17 April, 1945 at Ouachita Parish. Knowing what I think I know at this point about LEWIS, the picture seems to be coming into focus. Still, I have no record - e.g. divorce certificate, death certificate, etc. - to verify this. Too, if LEWIS did leave ELLEN, I'd like to find out where he went (and maybe why). Any light that your research could shed on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Of course, I would be glad to return the favor with my amateurish and humble "finder skills" at this end of the country should you need some legwork done here. Thanks, again. I have several generations that are from Louisiana (Ouachita and Union Pa.) and would be glad to share this information with you. How should I go about this? Kathy King

From: "Geoffrey Mears" August, 1998 Fri 11:28 AM Subject: MEARS family I am looking for information on the family of Robert Eward Mears of the Monroe, Louisiana area. Robert was my grandfather. He was born in 1882 and died in the Shreveport, La vicinity in 1947. Due to the fact that Robert died when my father was only five, none of the immeditae knows anything about him. Here's what I *do* know about Robert: He was born in 1882, and died in a/as a result of a construction accident during the construction of the Standard Gas Building in Shreveport in 1947. He is buried in the cemetery at Swartz, La, just north of Monroe. (Curiously, no other Mears family members have ever been interred there, before or since Robert's death.) He was married twice. I know little about the first marriage, but the second wife was Cora HESSELER. They were married sometime around 1940, and lived near Minden, La. My father was the only child from this marriage, but the first marriage resulted in at least a few half-brothers around the time of World War One. My father never had much contact with this "other family", but he did hear about them regularly as a child. I only recently came across a Social Security death index that featured one of these half-brothers, a Hilton MEARS. Hilton was born in May 1912, and died in Monroe, La in February 1986. I would like to know more about Hilton and this family from my grandfather's first marriage. I know there must a few of these people still living in the Monroe area, but I don't know where to start. Can anyone help me?

From: Ideewise@aol.com August, 1998 Fri 11:22 PM My grandfather Volley Calloway was born in or around Monroe in the 1890's, approximately 1894 or 1895. He was one of fourteen children and was given the surname Calloway. From his account, their actual father was a man by the name of Josh Parker. Josh died around the time my grandfather was in second grade, approx. 1900-1902. The Parker family was wealthy, they owned their own factory of some sort. My greatgrandmother was a licensed midwife by the state of Louisiana, and her name was Icelia Bower. I am not sure is she ever carried the Calloway or Parker name. Her maiden name was either Bower or Bowers. This name may also be inaccurate because she was from some Indian tribe orginating in Florida. We are not sure if the name is an inaccurate translation or not. Her brother was considered one of the first licensed African-American attorney's in the state of Lousiana. However, there seems to be no actual proof that he was African-American. All pictures of my greatgrandmother and her fourteen children by Josh Parker appear phenotypically white. They were however raised as being creole or black. We would appreaciate any info on any members of the the Calloway, Parker, or Bower families. I did find one of my grandfather's sisters named Tenie Calloway who married a Shack Zeigler on Dec. 5, 1891. Therefore, any info on the Zeigler family would also be helpful.

Subject: Baron de Bastrop's land grants Date: Sat, 06 Jun 1998 22:40:04 -0500 From: Carletta Dunne Do you know where I could locate copies of the contracts Baron de Bastrop entered into with the settlers who came to Louisiana in exchange for a Land Grant in agreement with the Baron? I am particularly interested in finding the contract between Jean (John) Dehart and Baron de Bastrop. The Baron granted John 800 acres when John moved his family to Louisiana in 1797. In these contracts, (if they still exist), does it say anything about where the settler is coming from when he moves to Louisiana? I have found Jean (John) and his family arriving at Fort Miro on 8 May 1797 on the Natchez by way of New Madrid, but I don't think John really originated in New Madrid. He may have traveled from elsewhere and embarked the Natchez at New Madrid on the last leg of the journey. Any help you can give me in this search will be GREATLY appreciated. thanks. On 1870 Ouchita census he is listed as being from Hanover, 38 years old, living with wife Sarah age 32 born SC. The children given on census were Mary Sarah, age 13 (who I have found on 1880 census m.to Milliard Parker) Augusta age 9(who I found m. to J. K. Dickerson in Ouchita Parish) William Charles, age 4, John, age 1. On 1880 Ouchita census I find Sarah ,widow, living with Sarah and Milliard Parker with additional children Louis Charles, born 1871, Ella, born 1877, and Charles R. born 1876. Charles' probate record of 1876 list all of the above children, with the exception of Charles R who was probably born after his death. I have found record of marriage of Charles and Sarah in SC. Hope maybe there are some Parker's or Dickerson's, possibly even a Boffenschen, still out there who will see this and help me out...Juanita Cooper Johnson

The old governor died 6 miles east of Monroe, Louisiana on January 30, 1836. I fear his gravesite has been lost to historical obscurity. Can anyone tell me exactly where he is buried? I've corresponded with Dr. E Russ Williams of Monroe on this subject. There is a mansion out there named, Ingleside. Was this Governor William's last home? From: David Harms March 30, 1998, Sun 11:23 PM I'm looking for information about my wife's g-grandfather, E. S. JAMES (Edward Samuel), his parents and siblings. He was born 1-1-1829 in Alabama, and moved to Morehouse parish, Louisiana "at an early age." I could find no census entries for him in the 1850 Louisiana census, though I did find two minor children and one 21-year-old with JAMES surnames living with other Morehouse Parrish families -- suggesting that perhaps the children of a JAMES family were orphaned. Their names were Caroline, Sarah, and Julia (ages 15, 21, and 16 in 1850). E. S. I would love to find out if there was an Ellis family in Monroe that year (or close to it) and what their names were, what they did for a living, etc. I don't have any CDs so I can't look stuff up, like out of censuses. I haven't been able to find a trace of these people. I have sent for a birth certificate, but haven't received anything back yet; maybe there weren't any. He married Annie E. TURPIN in 1882, but in Morehouse Parish, so I don't know if he just went over there to get married, or had moved there, and/or if they went back to live in Ouachita Parish after marriage. By 1890-91 I think they had moved to Denison TX. Thanks Francesca Sutton
