When collecting material, become familiar with collector terminology in your area of interest. Utilize the knowledge of skilled, reputable, experienced dealers and maintain good rapport with them. They can be future sources in helping you build a collection.

  • When examining an item for authenticity, consider the writing medium used. Was he player alive when the ink, such as in a felt tip pen or ball-point pens, was available? Quilled pens were prominent in the mid-1800's until fountain pens were developed in 1884. Ball-points became prominent in the 1940's, felt tips in the 1960's and Sharpies in the 1970's.
  • Team balls, those with all key members, starters and bench players generally reserve the sweet spot for the manager's signature.
  • The ideal temperature for collections to be stored is 65 to 70 degrees with 50% humidity for storage on any collectible.

Another subtle hint in detecting a faked signature is to check the manufacturer of the ball and the president's signature on it. This may help distinquish deceased players who could not possibly have signed the ball.
