Windows - Releasing and Renewing IP Addresses

When you connect to your Bayou Internet service your computer obtains an IP address from one of our servers. That IP address is "leased" to your computer for a varying length of time that can range from a few hours to several days.

However, sometimes the IP lease becomes corrupted or your computer remains idle (not used) for too long and your lease expires. When that happens your computer may experience problems connecting to the Internet. Usually you can correct these connection issues by releasing your IP address and requesting a new one from the server.

Windows 95/98/ME

  1. Select Run from the Start menu.

  2. In the Run dialog box, type winipcfg and click the OK button. The IP address will be displayed.

  1. Click the Release All button. The IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway fields should turn to zeros.

  2. Click the Renew All button. All of the fields should repopulate within a few seconds. Be sure that you wait until the fields have values in them or you receive an error message from Windows. If you close this program before it has completed its task you will have to reboot your computer before you can use your Internet service.
