How To Connect with Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer 5.x and 6.x allows you to specify settings to control how you connect to the Internet on a per connection (LAN and individual dial-up networking) basis, including proxy usage.

  1. Launch IE and select Internet Options from the Tools menu. Click the Connections tab.

  2. If you do not use a modem to dial other Internet connections from your computer, Dial Up Networking connections will not be displayed.

  3. Verify that Always Dail My Default Connection is selected.

  4. Verify that your LAN settings and proxy information is correct.

  5. If you travel with your computer or use it to access a dial-up Internet Service Provider, your dial-up networking connections will already be displayed in the Dial-up settings field.

  6. If you use a dial-up connection infrequently, click to select Always Dail My Default Connection. If you travel frequently with this computer, you can select Dial whenever a network connection is not present. If you need to adjust proxy settings for your primary connection, review our LAN settings information.

  7. To customize a dial-up connection, or if you infrequently use your computer to dial an Internet Connection, on the Primary Connections tab, select Always Dail My Default Connection (as shown).

If you travel and use the computer while on the road, select Dial whenever a network connection is not present.
  1. To customize the settings for a dial-up connection, click it to highlight it and then click Settings.

  2. Click the OK button to save your changes.

  3. Click the OK button again to exit Internet Options
