Books From My Seabag

Here are some thoughts on books I've read and enjoyed.

BEING A CHILD OF GOD by Warren W. Wiersbe (Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1996, 242 pages, $17.99)

In Being A Child of God, Dr. Wiersbe reaches back into his experience and study "to explore the profound and marvelous truth that we as Christians are part of God's family." Christians are called the children of God in the Bible.

TURN TOWARD THE WIND by Dale Hanson Bourke (Zondervan Publishers, 1996, 140 pages, $18.99)

"Change is always a death of something we have held closely for a time and a beginning of something unseen, untested, or unknown."
In Turn Toward the Wind Bourke shares her heart and the lessons she has learned about change from God and others. She shows how God can use changes in our lives to bring us closer to Him and how we can grow as a result.

GOD'S EMPOWERING PRESENCE by Dr. Gordon D. Fee [Hendrickson Publishers, 1994, 967 pages.]

"Fee's book is the most comprehensive treatment available of Paul's understanding of the Holy Spirit, a topic that has rarely received sufficient attention in studies of Pauline theology. Fee's method is exemplary: he first analyzes Paul's statements about the Spirit, in each individual letter, then moves to a synthesis of Paul's general pneumatology. The result is a book that is deeply exegetical, doing justice both to the particularity of Paul's writings and to the fundamental unity of his vision for the Spirit's role in the life of the Christian community. Most importantly, Fee emphasizes insistently that the Holy Spirit must be experienced as a living presence within the church."

THE UNIVERSE NEXT DOOR by James W. Sire, [Intervarsity Press, 1988, 246 pages.]

The Universe Next Door sets the standard for a clear, readable introduction to world views. In concise, easily understood terms James W. Sire explains the basics of theism, deism, naturalism, nihilism, existentialism, Eastern monism and the new consciousness.
